Vergil Ortiz Jr.’s manager closes door on future Jaron Ennis fight

Vergil Ortiz Jr’s manager Rick Mirigian says there will be no second chance for Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis to get the opportunity to fight his Virg after choosing not to face him on the card from February 22.

No second chance

Mirigian told Boxingscene: “Boots won’t get another chance,” he thinks he’s cool with that. Obviously, if Ennis (33-0, 29 KOs) wanted to fight Vergil, now would be the time because the money would be huge and the visibility high.

Everyone deserves a second chance in life, but there is a lack of trust in this matter. Team Ortiz Jr. doesn’t want to waste time with Boots and be left with nothing to show if he loses his temper.

Many fans around the world will be watching Riyadh’s season card on February 22 as it is one of the best in years. Vergil Jr. could now face one of these two fighters on this card:

–Erislandy Lara
–Alex Zayas

If Ennis were to move up to 154 and position himself for a world title shot for a belt that Virgil Jr. (22-0, 21 KO) holds, he would likely take that fight. Ortiz Jr. isn’t going to vacate his belt out of bitterness just because Ennis doesn’t want to fight him this time. It would be childish and doomed to failure.

Words don’t mean anything

‘Boots’ Ennis promoter Eddie Hearn has said he wants to stay at 147 to unify the division before considering moving up to 154 to take on the big names. Hearn insists that when Ennis moves up in weight, Vergil Jr. will be the first guy he faces. They are just words and mean nothing now after Mirigian’s statement that Ennis doesn’t get another chance.

Judging by the way the 27-year-old Ennis looked in his rematch against Karen Chukhadzhian on November 9, his career could collapse long before he moves up to 154. He looked absolutely horrible against Chukhadzhian, getting hit by shots all night and being forced to look bad in front of his hometown crowd at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

In hindsight, Hearn should have known better than to see Boots face Chukhadzhian again after the problems he had in their first fight on January 7, 2023, in Washington, DC. Ennis looked lost in this fight, being schooled from A to B by Chukhadzhian. Afterward, Boots blamed his performance on focusing too much on trying to get a knockout.

Jaron said before the rematch, “I’m going to have fun” and let the knockout come naturally. Man, he looked like he wasn’t having fun in the last money rematch, getting hassled by Chukhadzhian and the silently silent Philly crowd.
